Haley Barbour does create jobs and increase wages

for those who have to do the job he’s supposed to be doing

Bryant earns ‘acting governor’ pay

Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant has received an extra $50,000 over the past three years for serving as “acting governor” during Gov. Haley Barbour’s absences.

The Clarion-Ledger reports Bryant, by law, gets an extra $7.50 an hour to fill in for the governor. Bryant’s annual salary is $60,000.

Bryant said he asked the Mississippi Department of Finance and Administration in January about the potential of cutting the pay in half.

[snip]

In January alone, Bryant earned $8,515 in “acting governor pay,” MDFA records show, as Barbour was traveling into early primary and caucus states considering a run for president that he recently decided against.

Since Barbour took office in 2004, DFA records show $108,747 has been paid in acting governor pay.

Barbour spent half of 2010 traveling outside of Mississippi, but he is “doing his job” and always reachable even when he’s gone, aides have said.

Clarion Ledger: ‘Acting governor pay’ adds up during Barbour travels

Well, isn’t that special.

I have to wonder why, if the governor was “always reachable” and “doing his job”, did Lt. Gov. Bryant get paid?

Also, I have to wonder when the Haley Barbour is going to reimburse the taxpayers of MS for Bryant’s extra pay for those trips which weren’t for state business.

I’m a supercomputer, you’re like a TI-82!

Not much to say, been outside all day working, planting, building.

Absolutely not related to anything I did today, but this appeals to the science geek in me:

I know you’re watching …

While I never imagined, in my wildest dreams, I would ever receive much traffic on this site, I intentionally made it as open as reasonably possible so that anyone could visit and, upon registration, comment on anything I post.

For those who I personally know or for anyone (of any ideological bent) who demonstrates the capability to write coherent, fact-based posts, I also wanted to invite them to be contributors.

Having said that, however, I have had a number of user registrations from folks with obviously bogus email addresses. Some of these are setups for possible hack attempts, to be sure. The majority, I suspect, are from the unhinged malcontents who squat in the local mullet wrapper’s online forums, hoping to create trouble for me, particularly with regards to my run for office. To them, a message:

Well, bless your heart!

Ok, I really mean it this time …

It’s a good thing that blogging is only a part-time hobby for me and I’m not paid for what I write. LOL!

The past few weeks have been probably the most chaotic and hectic for me in quite a while. Having to work for a living (how unfair!), coupled with growing season being upon us (despite the lack of rain here, there’s quite a bit to do outside) has kept me extremely busy.

And, dealing with the Byzantine labyrinth that is the mostly unregulated insurance industry in this country courtesy of the March 18 accident which totaled our 2005 Honda Accord and sent my youngest son to the emergency room. I spent at least 4 hours on the phone yesterday dealing with my medical insurance company, the ambulance company (which is granted a monopoly by our Board of Supervisors), the insurance party of the party at fault (who shall remain nameless at this time) and a third-party “arbiter” (contracted to my medical insurance) will ensure that my medical insurance company is reimbursed for 100% of the claims paid by them out of whatever settlement we ultimately receive. I’ll write more extensively on this later but, suffice it to say, the entire system has the appearance of being deliberately designed to be as opaque and difficult for the average person to navigate as possible. It’s no wonder folks hire attorneys.

It’s been a while …

It’s funny. Once I got really serious about blogging my thoughts and rants, the weather got nicer and I’ve been spending a lot of time outside.

But, current events have not gone unnoticed.

Take this fine example of poor juxtaposition on the part of our local mullet wrapper, the Sun Herald:

While I’m sure there are many good people who work at WallyWorld, I’m not sure the editors thought about the headline vs. the photo. Let’s face it: Walmart doesn’t exactly have the greatest reputation (deserved or not) as being the most desirable place to work for peanuts.

Republicans are much more fiscally responsible ….

For reasons I can’t fathom (other than it being the convergence of belligerent ignorance and IOKIYAR), borrowing and spending is far and away the “superior” method of funding government:

Barbour signs $422.8M bond bill

Republican Gov. Haley Barbour has signed a $422.8 million bond bill to pay for needs at colleges, state agencies and for economic development projects.

Lawmakers have said the bill includes more than 100 projects. It provides nearly $99 million for universities; $105.7 million for state agencies and $152.9 million for economic development. It also includes $20 million for bridge repairs and $5 million for railroad improvements. The bill also includes $50 million for a road project for the Toyota plant in northeast Mississippi.

The state issues bonds to take on long-term debt for projects.

Barbour signed the bill on Wednesday.

Sun Herald: Barbour signs $422.8M bond bill

Rather than adjust MS tax code to actually pay for these things, Barbour and the conservative legislature are kicking of the can down the road. Mark my word, in a few years, we’ll be told we need to tighten our belts because of the state’s huge debt load.

Also note the priorities here: as much is provided to state agencies and universities as is provided for “economic development” (see that little kiss on the lips to Toyota?).

Note what doesn’t receive priority: Infrastructure.

Melmo was killed in Gulfport MS

Melmo was chained in her own yard when an over zealous police woman responding to a call next door shot her six times. Please sign the petition and let law enforcement know we expect our pets to be safe in their own yards and homes.

Why some police don’t need guns

They knew Rosie was in her own yard and talked about how to get her out of her yard because “they hated to shoot her in her own yard”. They even discussed tsaring the St. Bernard (Rosie’s brother) that was in the fenced in back yard. And keep in mind the footage is from the police own cameras.

Myth-Busting

My day:

#1 – Dug approx 1 cubic yard of mud, sticks out of pond drain, (courtesy of neighbor’s beaver).
#2 – Completely weeded and hand-tilled 3 3′x12′ raised vegetable beds
#3 – Cut all grass on back side pond (burned most of it the previous two nights; usually let it grow all season for the wildflowers); approx 1/2 acre.
#4 – Used lawnsweeper to pick up all grass clippings and dumped them in my compost piles.
#5 – Cleaned my brother’s 16′ equipment trailer and hooked it up for him when he got here.
#6 – Unloaded rocks (to be used for more landscaping projects) from my brother’s truck.
#7 – Used lawnsweeper in front yard to clean up the live oak leaves until the lawnsweeper broke.
#8 – Disassembled the lawnsweeper, identified the bad component, looked it up on partsdirect.com and ordered it.
#9 – Went to Country Corner Store and filled up three 6-gallon containers and one 5-gallon containers of gasoline for lawn and garden equipment.
#10 – Used tiller to bust up approximately 1/4 acre for planting wildflower seeds.
#11 – Spread wildflower seeds (for bees and hummers) using seed spreader.
#12 – Put up all equipment ’cause it got too dark to work

I know this is beating a dead horse into a bloody, pulpy mess but it really torques me to hear conservatives denigrate liberals/progressives about their lack of work ethic.

Remember, folks, IOKIYAR!

Came across this great example of fiscal conservatism at the Time (h/t Great Orange Satan):

Haley Barbour Flew State Plane To Deliver Cost Cutting Message To CPAC, Fox News

On Feb. 11, Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, his wife and three aides flew in a luxury jet to Washington for a weekend of politicking, including an appearance on Fox News Sunday and a speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference. “Our problem is not that we tax too little,” Barbour told the gathering. “It’s that we spend too much.”

The potential presidential contender may have another problem: Mississippi taxpayers paid the tab for Barbour’s first-class travel. State documents obtained by TIME show that Mississippi shelled out $7,020 to shuttle Barbour and his entourage to and from D.C. on its Cessna Citation, a cost that Barbour says is justified by state work he did in D.C. over the same weekend.

As Jed @ DailyKos asked, “Who knew Haley Barbour supported public financing of elections?”

Just one more example of why every other state in the nation is glad they’re not MS.
